So this is Spring

Not exaggerating about the enormous minnows
Opening Day for Trout Season was Saturday in Connecticut. I was going to do an opening day post Monday, but since I didn't catch any trout I could not write much without whining. All I can seem to do is catch enormous minnows and lose lures. I even tried using powerbait nuggets, normally a guarantee to catch a stocked trout early in the season, and the $&*#@( minnows ate that too!

So on to Cats on Tuesday.

Cheeto is being really sweet and adorable as usual, she does this thing where she will roll around chasing her tail. I think she's a small long-tailed polar bear.

I stacked a box full of gardening stuff on top of a laundry basket, and piled some fishing stuff (line, a telescoping rod, some bobbers, etc,) on top of he box. Of course Pout had to jump onto the box and when he jumped off he tipped over the basket and now my fishing gear is scattered all over a quarter of my room. At least there are no loose hooks to worry about. I think Cheeto enjoyed playing with one of the bobbers that I will never find again. I usually don't lose fishing gear until I get it to the water.

Nesting Cats

Cats on Tuesday

Sorry, I'm late again. I am actually hanging out with my sister's cats tonight. I will try to post some pics next week. Tawny got a haircut and is looking handsome. Miss Kitty is looking round and colorful.

My own cats have been having a good week. They got to have their own late Easter Egg hunt, if i ever get the time I will edit and upload the video of that... Maybe I will have it in time of Easter 2015. They got a lot of treats and some new catnip mice, and a cat condo.

Cheeto loves to sleep in the nest on top of hte condo, it is just the right size for her. I put it next to my desk so while I'm working on my computer she will curl up in her nest and be near me. Every now and then she'll give a chirrup so I will pet her and she will purr. The other day while she was feeling frisky and jumping around she squeezed into the middle condo and gave a chirp so I would look and see where she was. Her own fluffiness was forcing her out of the middle condo. Cheeto thought it was very funny.

One side of the condo is covered in sisal so all the cats like scratching it, but mostly ignore it. Sometimes, when Cheeto is not curled up on top, Pout will lay in the top nest for a little while but I do not think he really cares about it. He only goes in there because Cheeto spends a lot of time there and he gets jealous. He has his own nest, a plastic Christmas wreath.

The Cats - Ive been sick

Cats on Tuesday

I've been down with a bad cold. The soothing throat charm tea did not cure me this time. I have mostly been sleeping the past couple of days.

Pout has not been the most helpful. He found some noisy toy with a bell in it and played with it under my bed. I do not recall him enjoying any bell toys while I was not sick.

Cheeto has a much better bedside manner. When I'm not feeling well Cheeto snuggles next to me, purring gently.

Away from my poor cats

Camera Critters

My poor cats must be feeling abandoned again. Have been away from home a lot, briefly visited with them the other day before taking off again. Little Boy Pout made the most of it:
Mommy!

Here I am!

I love you, Mommy!

I felt terrible leaving him again. He's a very needy cat.

Don't worry, he's only rubbing,
NOT spraying
To make matter worse I've been cheating on Pout, played with my cousin's cat. A very handsome blue-grey cat, not sure of where my cousin got him but I'm pretty sure there is at least some Russian Blue there. He's a very friendly cat, very affectionate, does not play rough.

Ghost!

He would not chase the string much so I found him a matchbox car and he had a lot of fun kicking it around. Of course I didn't get any pictures of that. (And I put the string away because I did not want the cat swallowing it, besides the grossness of pooping string it can cause all sorts of problems)

The Cats are cold

 Cats on Tuesday

It is still winter and the cats are very cold, I am beginning to think their fur coats are for decoration. They cling to me all day long and make it just about impossible to get anything done. I barely got my spreadsheet assignments submitted on time. The only way I could get the cats to back off was to turn on my electric blanket and convince them to sleep on that for a while. That would work for a little while until the blanket either switched itself off or they got up to eat and decided I was closer to the food bowl than the blanket.

Even Tabitha, the least affectionate of the cats, has been getting clingy.

Cheeto on the mantle and the tall green thing to the right
The cats have been showing signs of wanting spring to hurry up and get here. Pout and Cheeto are both indoor cats (or are supposed to be) and since they can't be outside looking for fresh grass they have been getting into the houseplants. Out of hte corner of my eye  see this white thing flailing around and it's Cheeto attacking whatever this tall green thing is:

Pout has been playing jungle cat in the spiderplant.

The Cats - A Few Photos

I do not like all the junk in the background, but that's one of my best pictures of Pout. A nice profile, his whiskers pointed forward because he's smiling for the camera. See how handsome he is? Sleek black and white coat, bright eyes. I love my Little Boy.

I did not have much time to write much for this week, so it looks like it's just a bunch of nice cat pictures. The above is Cheeto cleaning out a yogurt container. I've been meaning to send this pic to Cabot, get Cheeto some sponsorship or something. Cabot's Greek yogurt is really good too, by the way, very thick and creamy. Their cheddar is great too, but Cheeto does not like cheese very much.

And Rivkah in a basket. The cats usually like to play under boxes or baskets, but not this one. After I took the picture I realized that Rivkah could not get out. I felt guilty but she was not under there too long, and it made a cute picture.

The Cats - Birdwatching

Sorry for the delay, I know I have not posted since Thursday. I wanted to post yesterday about ice fishing but since I got skunked the only time I went since the Bullhead I could no motivate myself to write a worthwhile post about how cold it was and trying to admire the scenery and nature stuff... I've been really busy with school.

So on to Cats on Tuesday.

Cheeto has been taking over my blog even though she is technically not my cat. So today's post is all about Pout. Pout hates Cheeto and I do not know why, though her smacking his backside when Pout's guard is down has not helped.I took a quick video of Pout watching birds at the feeder. The video quality is lousy, a lot of glare from the window, and at one point you can hear my mother say something and me being snotty. But here's the video anyways, those following my blog via email might not get the video and will have to visit my blog for the video.

Pout is fun to watch. Sometimes if the birds are close to the window he will flatted his ears and duck his head so his eyes are barely over the sill, but of course he won't do that when I am recording a video.

Cheeto's fur isn't warm enough

It appears that Cheeto's fur is not warm enough. She burrows underblankets, making some odd photos. Not sure what to make of her expression in the last pic.

Cheeto did not appreciate the unflattering photos, I left my camera on the desk and left my room for three minutes, I come back and my camera is gone. For a minute I thought it had been stolen, then I found it on the floor. Fortunately it had not been damaged.

I guess I'm lucky to not be sleeping on the floor.

The Cats - How do I get anything done?

Cats on Tuesday

Cheeto in her proper place
I live with four cats, it's really a wonder I ever get anything done. Most of what I do is on my computer but Cheeto believes she belongs between me and the keyboard. If I am typing she likes to rest her head on my arm.As if that's not bad enough Cheeto has taken an interest in what I'm doing on the computer.
Looks like I lost my fingers...

And Cheeto isn't the only cat who has to be in the center of attention. Pout is ridiculously affectionate and clingy.

Pout in his proper place
I really don't think it's possible to make Pout leave me alone when he's in an affectionate mood.

I start classes today, all online, so of course Cheeto and Pout will be helping me.

Tea in the litterbox

Tea leaves are not cheap - well, compared to other vices out there tea leaves are very cheap, but I'm a cheapskate. I try to get the most out of ever cent I spend, and before I throw something away I try to make some more use out of it.

I steep my tea leaves at least twice, most of my favorite teas are flavored and I like them strong so after my first steeping there is not much flavor left. By the third steeping usually all I can make out of it is lightly colored hot water. Sometimes I'll add a little fresh leaves to the old leaves to help give them some flavor but usually not.

If it was spring I would toss the used leaves in the garden. But it's winter and there is several inches of snow over where my garden was. So I went online and looked up other uses for used tea leaves. There are quite a few and I don't feel like listing the many amazing uses for used tea leaves so go search for yourself, today I'm only writing about one use for used tea leaves (two if you count tossing them in your garden).

Tea leaves absorb odors and moisture so some people scatter them in their cats' litter boxes. According to some websites:
Not the litter box
"Put used dried tea leaves in your cat's litter box and scoop every day and it will absorb odors."

I've been raised by cats and have lived with cats my entire life. When you live with cats and don't want to appear on Animal Cops as an animal abuser you address the issue of where your cat goes to the bathroom. Some people treat their cat like a dog and have it do its business outside, some have succeeded in training their cats to use the toilet and kudos to them. But the rest of us use litter boxes. Over the years I've looked into several odor control tips:
  • Sprinkle baking soda into your litter box and scoop it daily to control odors
  • Use/add silica crystals in your litter box and scoop it daily to control odors.
  • Use our special litter and scoop it daily to control odors.
  • Use this filter/air freshener and scoop it daily to control odors.
  • Shred twenty dollar bills, mix it in the litter and scoop it daily to control odors.
Notice a pattern here? Scooping the litter box daily is the real secret to controlling odors. Some litters are better than others of course (Our favorite is Arm & Hammer super scoop) so long as it absorbs and clumps decently and you scoop it often enough it won't smell like the Crazy Cat Lady's condemned residence but a litter box is not a rose you want to stick your nose in.

I know all this but I hate to waste anything, even used tea leaves so I decided to try drying out the leaves and putting them in the cats' favorite litter box. What do you know, I scooped it every day (well, okay, one day I couldn't be bothered but only put it off by one day, there's 3 litter boxes to 4 cats so one day won't be so bad) and the area doesn't smell like cat poop and ammonia. But then again the area did not smell like cat poop and ammonia before because I scoop the litter box regularly.

Used dried tea leaves
Anyways I'm going to keep drying and putting the used tea leaves in the litter boxes until I can access the garden because I hate to waste anything. It gives me a feeling of self satisfaction and I can pretend I'm saving the world.

Adding used tea leaves to the litter won't hurt the cats, as long as they don't eat the leaves. Cheeto has stolen a bit of milky tea from my cup when it's cool but never showed any interest in the leaves themselves, and she's not going to eat something in her litter box so I am not worried about that. If any of the cats started eating anything in their litter box the tea leaves would be my last concern. My only concern is adding so many used tea leaves to the litter box that there's more tea than litter in the box and the cats start associating tea with relieving themselves.

Give that a second to sink in.

Ever have a cup of tea that tasted absolutely horrible?

I'm not posting a picture of a litter box so here's a picture of what happened when I squeezed a teabag too hard and the damp leaves shot out both ends. Isn't that gross looking? Like kitten poop. Another reason to prefer loose leaf tea.
Okay, I won't add so many tea leaves to the litter so it gets to that point.

Now the challenge is drying out the used leaves. I don't want to throw still wet or even damp tea leaves to the litter. Clumping cat litter is designed to clump when exposed to the ammonia in cat urine, if you add water to clumping cat litter it turns to mud (which is why you must never use clumping cat litter on icy/snowy driveways and roads hoping for traction, it makes matters worse) so if I throw wet tea leaves in the litter box I'll make tea mud in the cat's litter box which will be disgusting, the cats won't want to soil their paws in that and I'd have to clean it up. That is the opposite of improving a litter box.

So after I've steeped the last bit of tea from my leaves instead of throwing them away I put them in a shallow bowl on the stove and let them sit there for a while, hoping the heat from the stove will help dry them a little then I forget about them until someone asks me what I'm doing with those leaves on the stove. Then I take the leaves to my room and spread them over a plate. I would like to put the leaves in a sunny window but my mother's plants have dibs on window space. So I put them on my desk where some sunlight reaches them.

Drying the leaves on my desk is not working very well. Pout decided that the plate is an excellent place to take a nap and roll around then tracks the leaves everywhere. And of course all four cats go out of their way to tromp over the leaves like an army.

Pout didn't want to be photographed sleeping on the plate, so here's a Tabby loaf on the plate.
It took me about a week to come up with the idea of putting the leaves on top of my bookshelf where even a skinny cat cannot fit. There is no sun and little ventilation but it will have to do until I come up with a better method. I know I could dry the leaves on a shallow pan in the stove and may resort to that. It would make the house smell nice and help avoid any mold growing on the tea.

Now I'm being asked about what is burning in the stove. I can't win.

I've also read that tea has antibacterial properties, so possibly less germs. But please wash your hands after scooping the litter box. With soap and water... Not just tea.

The Cats

I am a crazy cat lady. I only own two cats, but the four that I live with all act like I'm their human.

Rivkah is also part unicorn
Rivkah is my 11 year-old Abyssinian mix. She will ignore me for days as if forgetting I even exist. Then she sees me, makes eye contact, then this happens:

Cat rolls Cheeto and Tabitha
She can't get enough of me. She purrs like a mad thing, head butts, rubs, tries to merge with my windpipe. Love from Rikah is a dangerous thing.

Pout
Some cat owners don't let their cats sleep in their bed... Obviously that's not the case with me. The cats sleep in my bed more than I do. Notice that Rivkah is not in the picture of the other cats sleeping in he bed? That is because Rivkah really hates cats. I'm afraid of what Rivkah would do if she ever recognized her own reflection in a mirror, she might kill herself she hates cats so much. Rivkah usually ignores the other cats and if they get too close she snarls and smacks them. Some nights if it is really cold Rivkah will sleep in the bed with me and hte other cats... those nights I sleep little because she gets cranky if I move, snarling at me, though at least she won't smack me like she does to the cats.
